अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न (FAQs)
Can beginners attempt the Hampta Pass trek?
Yes. Hampta Pass is one of the best introductory crossover treks in the Himalayas. The daily walking distances are moderate (4 to 8 km per day), and the ascent is gradual. A reasonable level of cardiovascular fitness is required for the 8-hour pass day.
Is the Hampta Pass trek open during the monsoon in July and August?
Yes. Hampta Pass is one of the few Himalayan treks that operates during peak monsoon. Because Lahaul lies in the rain-shadow of the Greater Himalaya, crossing the pass transports you from the rainy Kullu valley into the dry, arid, sunny desert of Lahaul.
How do trekkers cross the icy Shea Goru river?
The river is crossed early in the morning when glacial meltwater levels are lowest. Trekkers change into sandals, unbuckle heavy backpack chest straps, and link arms tightly to form a coordinated human chain that easily breaks the current.
Is the visit to Chandratal Lake guaranteed on every trek?
Visiting Chandratal depends entirely on road conditions between Chatru, Batal, and the lake. During early June or heavy July cloudbursts, stream washouts (such as Pagla Nullah) can temporarily block vehicle transit.
What mobile networks work on the Hampta Pass trek?
Mobile networks (Jio, Airtel) work up to Jobra. Once you enter the pine forest, there is zero cellular signal until you cross through the Atal Tunnel on your return to Manali.
Can we complete Hampta Pass in reverse from Chatru to Manali?
While theoretically possible, it is rarely done because starting from Chatru (3,100m) involves a much steeper, relentless vertical ascent up loose scree without proper acclimatization.
